Greg Monroe is set to join the New Orleans Pelicans coaching staff in a player development role, according to Christian Clark of The New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Selected as the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Monroe enjoyed a successful professional career, averaging 13.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game over 646 regular-season appearances spanning ten seasons.
He played for a variety of teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Washington Wizards, and Utah Jazz.
His last stint in the NBA came during the 2021-22 season, where he moved between four different teams from December to April.
In addition to his NBA experience, the 34-year-old has showcased his skills in international leagues across Germany, Russia, China, and Puerto Rico, further broadening his basketball expertise.
As Clark points out, Monroe is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he attended high school in the New Orleans area, where he made a name for himself.
He earned the prestigious Louisiana Mr. Basketball Award in both 2007 and 2008, solidifying his status as one of the top players in the state before advancing to college basketball at Georgetown.
In 2023, Monroe shared with The Times-Picayune that he was living in Metairie, the location of the Pelicans’ practice facility, during the off-seasons when he wasn’t competing overseas.
This local connection adds a personal dimension to his new role with the team, as he aims to give back to the community that shaped his early basketball journey.
