Elfrid Payton, who started in 395 NBA games, is making another attempt to return to the league by signing a training camp deal with the New Orleans Pelicans.

According to Andrew Lopez, sources confirmed that Payton will join the Pelicans ahead of the upcoming season.

The 30-year-old point guard, a native of Gretna, Louisiana, last played in the NBA during the 2021-2022 season.

Payton previously played for the Pelicans during the 2018-2019 season, establishing a connection with the franchise.

After his time with the Pelicans, Payton signed with the Phoenix Suns in August 2021 but faced challenges in securing a consistent role.

In early 2023, he signed with Osos de Manatí in Puerto Rico, further expanding his playing experience.

Payton’s rights were later acquired by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, where he continued to demonstrate his skills in the G League.

During his stint with the Mad Ants, Payton averaged12.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game.
