Kyle Hines, a four-time EuroLeague champion, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball as the 2024-25 season approaches.

Hines, whose career began in 2008, expressed gratitude for the unexpected journey basketball took him on.

“A career that started in 2008, I could have never imagined that basketball would have taken me this far,” Hines said, reflecting on his path.

After going undrafted, he embraced the opportunity to play in Europe, where he achieved significant success and personal growth.

“When I didn’t get drafted, what I thought would be one of the biggest disappointments in my life turned out to be my biggest blessing,” Hines shared, highlighting how his disappointment turned into a remarkable career.

During his 16-year career, Hines became known for his leadership, competitiveness, and defensive prowess.

He leaves behind a legacy that includes four EuroLeague titles and numerous individual accolades.

In his retirement statement, Hines thanked his family, coaches, teammates, and fans who supported him throughout his career.

“I played the game for the work, the love, and the opportunity to compete with my teammates every single day,” he emphasized, underlining the passion that drove him.

Hines highlighted the importance of his family, particularly his wife Gianna, and their children, in motivating him daily.

“Thank you to my wife Gianna for giving the love and support needed to have a successful career,” Hines said, acknowledging his family’s role in his journey.

Hines also expressed appreciation for his extended family, agent, trainers, and strength coaches who contributed to his success.

He mentioned the impact of legendary coaches like Andrea Trinchieri and Ettore Messina in shaping him as both a player and a person.

“To my legendary coaches Trinchieri, Cancellieri, Chris Fleming, Duda Ivkovic, Coach Bartzokas, Itoudis, and Messina, thank you for pushing me to become a better player but more importantly a better human being,” Hines remarked, recognizing those who guided him.

Hines also thanked the clubs he represented, including Veroli Basket, Brose Bamberg, Olympiacos, CSKA Moscow, and Olimpia Milano.

His remarkable achievements include being named to the EuroLeague 2010–20 All-Decade Team and leading the league in games played.

Hines was also a three-time EuroLeague Best Defender and a six-time VTB United League champion.

In addition to his EuroLeague success, Hines won multiple domestic championships in Germany, Greece, and Italy.

His defensive skills earned him numerous honors, including being named the VTB United League Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.

Hines’ impact extended beyond individual accolades; he was a respected leader and mentor to his teammates.

As Hines transitions to the next chapter of his life, he looks forward to new adventures while cherishing the memories and relationships formed throughout his career.

“All the best,” Hines concluded, as he embarks on his post-basketball journey.
