Kevin Garnett recently shared his thoughts on what the New York Knicks need to do to make an impact in the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
The former NBA star believes the Knicks are facing a significant challenge in the Eastern Conference, with the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, standing in their way.
Garnett emphasized that the Knicks are trying to build something special but acknowledged that the Celtics are a formidable opponent.
“New York (Knicks) is trying to do something special… only problem is it’s a big ol buzzsaw right above them that’s a green buzzsaw that’s cutting everything in half,” Garnett said.
He referred to the Celtics as a “green buzzsaw,” highlighting the team’s dominance in the conference.
Despite this, Garnett acknowledged the Knicks’ efforts to construct a strong roster during the offseason.
“The Knicks definitely tryna make a move and constructed a special roster this off-season… but lord they got a GREEN BUZZSAW aka The C’s ☘️ hanging right over they head,” Garnett added in a tweet.
To compete with the Celtics and make noise in the 2024-25 season, Garnett believes the Knicks need a strong two-way guard combination.
“It’s gon take a real 2-way guard combo to make noise next year,” Garnett concluded.
The Knicks acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets in a trade that involved letting go of Bojan Bogdanovic.
Last season, the Knicks made another key move by trading RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a second-round pick to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa, and Malachi Flynn.
Anunoby’s contribution helped the Knicks achieve a 14-2 record in January, including winning streaks of six and nine games.
However, the Knicks faced adversity when Julius Randle dislocated his right shoulder in a game against the Miami Heat on January 27, 2024.
Randle’s injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season, and he ultimately underwent season-ending surgery.
Despite Randle’s absence, the Knicks finished the regular season with 50 wins, their highest total since 2013, and secured the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
In the playoffs, the Knicks defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in six games during the first round.
However, their postseason run ended when they were upset by the Indiana Pacers in a seven-game series in the second round.
