Rumors surrounding LeBron James’ potential trade to the Golden State Warriors before last season’s trade deadline were not entirely baseless, but they were quickly quashed.
According to Marc Stein, these discussions never gained traction largely due to the strong opposition from Rich Paul, James’ agent.
The possibility of James moving from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Warriors was a topic of speculation, with some owner-to-owner dialogue reportedly taking place between the Lakers’ Jeanie Buss and the Warriors’ Joe Lacob.
However, despite Draymond Green’s attempts to convince James to consider a move to the Bay Area, the talks were effectively shut down.
Stein noted that the Lakers might have reluctantly entertained trade conversations with the Warriors if James had shown interest. However, Rich Paul stepped in to prevent the idea from progressing further. Paul’s primary concern was the potential backlash James could face for switching teams for the fourth time in his career.
Paul’s intervention was driven by a desire to protect James’ legacy and avoid the negative reaction that could arise from another high-profile team change. The prospect of James leaving Southern California for Northern California was deemed too risky, especially given the potential for public scrutiny.
