The Biden administration paved the path for the release of five detained American citizens in Iran by granting a universal exemption for global banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar, exempting them from U.S. sanctions. As a reciprocal measure, the administration also committed to releasing five Iranian citizens detained in the United States.

Enes Kanter Freedom, who was effectively ousted from the NBA in February 2022 for his outspoken stance on the treatment of Uyghur Muslims by communist China, criticizes the Biden administration for releasing $6 billion to Iran, a state sponsor of terror:

“The United States classifies Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism. Releasing the funds will only feed Tehran’s appetite for taking more and more hostages. They will spend that $6 billion funding terrorist attacks against America and our allies.”
