Despite WNBA’s yearly financial losses, about $10 million annually, covered by the NBA, President Joe Biden joined the debate on WNBA salaries, advocating for ‘fair’ pay for female athletes. This follows increased discussion after Caitlin Clark’s selection as the top pick in the WNBA draft.
“Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all,” Biden wrote on X. “But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share.
“It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”
Biden’s statement followed the Indiana Fever’s selection of Clark as the top pick in the draft, with Brink and Cardoso going No. 2 and No. 3 to the LA Sparks and Chicago Sky, respectively.
This renewed interest in WNBA salaries, with Spotrac revealing Clark’s projected rookie contract at $338,056 over four years. She’s expected to earn $76,535 in 2024, with incremental increases yearly, potentially reaching $97,582 if the team exercises its option in 2027.
