Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone struck gold after he auctioned 24 lucrative pieces of his memorabilia from the epic run he had as a member of the “Dream Team” in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
Malone managed to amass a total of $5 million from the biddings which were set and arranged by Goldin.
Michael Jordan’s No. 9 white jersey which he wore during United States’ 127-76 domination of Lithuania in the Olympic semifinals occupied the biggest chunk of the overall profit gained by Malone, as the piece was sold for a record-breaking $3,003,000. Jordan’s game-worn shoes from the 1992 Tournament of the Americas were petched for $420,000.
A jersey of Larry Bird also against Lithuania managed to get picked up for $360,000, while a game-used sneakers of the Boston Celtics icon were sold for $91,200. Magic Johnson’s jersey from the semifinal round got purchased for $336,000. These valuations for the pieces revolving the two all-time greats set the Olympic record for them, respectively.
The jerseys of Charles Barkley ($230,400), David Robinson ($116,400) and Clyde Drexler ($92,200) also received sky high demand from bidders.
“It was truly remarkable to have been able to work with Karl Malone himself to offer this iconic collection to fans everywhere,” Goldin said. “Now a lucky few own a piece of revolutionary sports history from some of the greatest players of all time.”
