The Lakers traded for D’Angelo Russell, who played for the team during the first two years of his NBA career, before the trade deadline.

The 26-year-old point guard will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and will be able to choose where to play next.

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers want to keep Russell beyond this season and could offer him a new deal before this season ends or in summer.

“I think for the Lakers, they’ve used that pick now. They’ve moved off of Russell Westbrook and now D’Angelo Russell is a player I think they do have interest in talking about a contract extension with. Whether it’s during the season or after the season when he’s a free agent and can do a new deal.”

This season Russell is averaging 17.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists in 32.9 minutes per game.
