US officials in Moscow visited weed-smuggler WNBA player Brittney Griner recently sentenced to nine years in a penal colony. Griner’s visitors “saw firsthand her tenacity and perseverance despite her present circumstances,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Twitter on Thursday.

“We continue to press for the immediate release of Brittney Griner and [fellow incarcerated American] Paul Whelan and fair treatment for every detained American,” he added.
