Becky Hammon has been hired by Las Vegas Aces after signing a multiyear lucrative deal with the WNBA side, as ESPN and the Athletic reported earlier.
The 44-year-old will become the highest-paid coach in the WNBA, one year after becoming the first woman to coach an NBA team in a game.
A six-time All-Star guard, Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA (1999-2014), spending the first half of her career with the New York Liberty and the latter half with the San Antonio Stars.
Hammon was reportedly a finalist for the Portland Trail Blazers job, which went to Chauncey Billups in June. The 44-year-old coach has been on Gregg Popovich’s staff for seven years.
The move means that coach Bill Laimbeer will be stepping aside for the Aces. Hammon will have the chance to coach one of the league’s brightest young players, 2020 MVP A’ja Wilson in Las Vegas.
