The Memphis Grizzlies have waived backup center Gorgui Dieng, the team announced.

The move opens up a roster spot that the team can use to sign another player.

Dieng played in 22 games (one start) for the Grizzlies this season, averaging 7.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game (16.9 minutes per game), while shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 47.9 percent from three-point.

He was recently out of the rotation, as he hadn’t played since Feb. 28.

The 31-year-old also played 17 games for the Grizzlies last season after being traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves in February, 2020.

Once Dieng clears waivers, he could eventually sign with a contending team who is looking for some frontcourt depth.

In 537 career NBA games, Dieng is averaging 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 block per game.
