Paul George signed a lucrative $190 million, four-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers. George made it clear that he is a Clipper for life, after signing his new contract.
However, according to The Ringer, the LA franchise explored trade options for George, before deciding to offer a max-extension to the Los Angeles native.
“According to a front office source, there was chatter around the league that the Clippers did their due diligence in seeing what they could get on the market for George before deciding that the extension was the best option. One front office staffer said that, despite the ugly numbers on the back end of George’s deal, the market for George around the league would have likely gotten him that same contract elsewhere”
Paul George struggled in the postseason last year failing to make an impact for the Clippers, who lost a 3-1 series lead to the Nuggets in the second round.
In his 48 games with the LA Clippers, the 30-year-old swingman averaged 21 points and five rebounds. With Ty Lue as their new head coach, the Clippers are hoping for a different ending in the 2020/21 campaign.
With the Clippers hoping that fellow superstar Kawhi Leonard will opt to remain with the franchise, George’s extension secures that he could play the role of the second star.
For the Clippers’ sake, they will be hoping he lives up to the expectations.
