Paul George revealed his intentions to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers due to his loyalty to Kawhi Leonard, saying he felt committed to the team because of Leonard’s influence.
George, who spent five seasons with the Clippers, shared these thoughts with FOX Sports following his first game against his former team since joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
In his comments, George explained that Leonard played a pivotal role in bringing him to Los Angeles, a move that initially united the two star players under the Clippers’ banner.
“Kawhi brought me here, Kawhi was the guy who wanted me to play here. I’m stuck, I’m glued to him,” he said. George described his loyalty to Leonard as a driving factor, reiterating that he was committed to riding out his career alongside his former teammate.
The 76ers forward went on to detail how his mindset during contract negotiations revolved around his commitment to Leonard and the Clippers.
“I wanted to ride this thing out,” George explained. “If Kawhi is out right now, cool, take your time. Still, my point of view was, I’m here for the long run with you.”
On June 29, 2024, George opted out of his player option for the 2024-25 season, which was worth $48.7 million, officially entering free agency. Just days later, on July 6, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, marking the end of his tenure with the Clippers.
The decision closed a significant chapter in George’s career in Los Angeles, where he and Leonard were central figures for the franchise over five seasons.
Reflecting on his time in Los Angeles, George spoke about the close connection he felt with Leonard and the commitment he believed they shared. “That was how I was looking at the whole negotiation,” George said, emphasizing his dedication to the Clippers as long as Leonard was part of the team.
In his first matchup against the Clippers as a member of the 76ers, George contributed 18 points, 2 assists, and 7 rebounds. However, his efforts fell short as the Clippers triumphed with a final score of 110-98.
