The NBA is planning to administer a daily point-of-care, rapid testing system for this upcoming season, according to Shams Charania.
The results are expected in approximately 30 minutes for home teams and 90 minutes for teams on the road prior to games.
The policy for invalid COVID-19 test results will be to undergo another rapid test at least 30 minutes after the result of the first test and still be able to participate in team activities while awaiting a second result, Charania notes.
The NBA and NBPA plans to discuss players, coaches and staff being required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine when one is confirmed to be safe and effective during the season.
If a vaccine ends up not being required, those who elect not to receive it may have additional health and safety-focused restrictions, such as wearing masks and being tested more frequently than those who get the vaccine.
The league will also provide twice-a-week testing for household members of players and staff in order to “enhance their protection throughout the season,” according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
Positive COVID-19 tests will be a part of the 2020-2021 season, but protocols are in place to help ensure that the season goes as smooth as it possibly can.
The rapid tests will also be a way to help limit and control any possible outbreaks within a team.
