New Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd could start his coaching career at the third game of asking after entering an interim plea on a DUI charge from last year, which will result in an NBA suspension.

Kidd, who enters his first coaching role with a potential top four team in the Eastern Conference ran his Cadillac Escalade into a tree at the intersection of Cobb Road and Little Cobb Road in Water Mill L.I., in the early hours of July 16 2012. He admitted to local police that he “had a few drinks” at the time of his arrest.

“He will say that the drinks he had that night rendered him intoxicated,” Kidd’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr., was saying on Monday morning. “What Jason is going to do is stand up and own this.”

Part of Kidd’s plea is that he makes several appearances at local schools, which can be taped and used as public-service announcements if the DA’s office wants to use them in that way.

Until then, Kidd will likely be making a return to court in October for his sentencing. Once the Nets’ coach takes the plea, the NBA will suspend him for at least three games. A small price to pay for a veteran guard that nearly lost his life.

Kidd will more than likely lose his driving licence for 90 days but could be eligible for a conditioned licence.

So as Kidd scouts the NBA Summer League and thinks about his teaching role at the Nets next season, he’ll start the new season by teaching something far more important than basketball: The dangers of drinking and driving.
