Panathinaikos’ Jason Kapono praised his team’s effort in the Greens opening Euroleague Top 16 win over Zalgiris Kaunas last night.

The former two-time NBA three-point scoring champion hit 16 points on his debut for the 2011 Euroleague winners against the Lithuanian champions which included four triples as Panathinaikos began their Top 16 campaign with a win.

“It was a great game in front of a very enthusiastic crowd, which was cheering and pushed us to get the victory,” Kapono said. “I never had such an experience in the past and I am very happy for what we did.”

16,000 boisterous Panathinaikos fans roared on their side as they were made to work hard by a well-organised Zalgiris side that have been tipped to progress further than the Top 16, which was their feat last season.

Kapono recognised the amount of effort needed and admits that his three-pointers were part of a team effort.

“I tried to give my best, but my threes are coming from the whole team’s effort, it is not a personal success,” he admitted.

“We played very good in the first half, but then we missed the energy and played slow. Zalgiris took advantage of the offensive boards and the transition game and the game became a thriller. “

Despite that, the former NBA journeyman has begun his new adventure in Europe and he looks to be a good fit in Greece.

“I like the situation here and I am looking forward to having more victories and great moments.”
