England Basketball champions London Leopards have decided not to join the British Basketball League for next season.

Despite support from the BBL to join next season, the club’s bosses have chosen to stay in the lower tier EBL (England Basketball League) for at least one more season.

Leopards won the National Cup, league and play-off treble last season.

We have been working closely with the BBL now for a number of months to bring top level basketball back to Essex and feel the decision to remain in the EBL for one more season is the right one for the long-term sustainability of the Leopards,” said Gareth Roberts, the managing director of the London Leopards.

“However, we are continuing to work with the BBL and hope to be able to confirm our position for the 2013-14 season shortly.”

Despite this, the BBL are rumoured to be accepting Manchester Giants as the league’s new franchise for the 2012/13 season.
