Zalgiris have agreed a season-long deal with Aleksandar Trifunovic for him to replace Ilias Zouros as coach.

Zalgiris owner Vladimir Romanov made the strange decision to sack Greek coach Zouros after Zalgiris’ defeat to CSKA Moscow on the opening night of the Euroleague.

The sacking was made even more strange as Zouros guided Zalgiris to a League and Cup double as well as the Baltic League last season. He guided the Kaunas side to three wins in three games so far this season.

Back-to-back defeats in the VTB League and that loss in the Euroleague though cost Zouros his job.

Trifunovic comes to Kaunas having previously coached arch-rivals Lietuvos Rytas. He has become Zalgiris’ eighth coach in two years.

Zalgiris are currently joint top and undefeated in the LKL with four wins from their four games, but are 0-2 in the Euroleague.
