Kaunas, Lithuania– Player-coach Marcus Brown who has been recognized as one of the best U.S. athletes to ever play abroad played a perfect game tonight (4/4 three, 2/2 FT, 0 turnovers, 14 points and 3 rebounds) in just twenty minutes to lead his Zalgiris club to victory against cross Lithuanian town faction Lietuvos Rytas.
Brown who just days from now will turn 37 says he believes he has coaching and player development in his future but will play one final year to get himself prepared and approved. “After I’m finished playing I’d like to do some player development for the younger kids and get under a highly experienced coach,” Brown says.
If all things go well the rest of this season with his Zalgiris club; Brown plans to take his 19 Championships and Cup Titles up to 21 by winning two more titles, the LKL Championship and the BBL Championship to add to Zalgiris already victorious LKL Cup. But it won’t be without a fight. Zalgiris and Rytas seem to each have their days in this long time rivalry and Rytas won the Championship last season. However, Brown helped bring Zalgiris to its’ first triple crown in 2008.
It’s accomplishing feats like that to go with Brown’s award winning smile is what has made Brown special. When Brown finally retires from playing– european basketball will have lost a lot but at the same time it has a lot to gain if Brown comes back to coach. It’s teams like Unicaja Malaga Baloncesto who enjoyed their first ever Spanish Championship and first ever Euroleague final four with Brown, French club CSP Limoges who enjoyed their first and only triple crown of titles in 1999, or Efes Pilsen who won back to back Turkish Championships and back to back Turkish Cups with Brown–the fans there will never forget him. But there is good reason to believe Brown will never be far from anyone’s mind because if his track record rings true to form Brown will bring Championships and Cup titles as an assistant or head coach in his years to come.
