The 1999 WNBA Champion and one of the best women basketball players Bulgaria has ever known – Polina Tzekova, is donating a jersey from her championship season for a good cause. Everything is being done for the recovery of Georgi Ognyanov, multiple tiem champion of Bulgaria in both sambo and judo. The athlete suffered a heavy injury during the 3rd place match-up in the World Student Championship in Prague in October 2010 and has been paralyzed ever since.
In Prague Georgi was diagnosed with broken fifth cervical vertebrae and also damaged sixth on his spinal cord. Ognyanov has been hoping for help from the respective federations in Bulgaria, but with no luck. Actually it turned out that the young man was sent to the competition without any insurance. However, the basketball community in Bulgaria is willing to help. All the profits from the auction for Tzekova’s jersey, and also from the charity basketball game between journalists and basketball legends, which is going to be held on the 13th of March in Sofia will be donated for Ognyanov’s recovery.
When Tzekova understood about the situation of the young athlete she said: “I’m willing to help, in any possible way”.
The charity game and the auction will take place during the Finals of the Bulgarian Cup, as tip-off is set for 15.45 on the 13th of March in Universiada Hall.
