Tafari ToneyThe Sheffield Sharks today announced the signing of former Newcastle Eagles dynamo Tafari Toney.

Following much anticipation on who the Sharks would get to fill the shoes of retired captain Chris Sanders, the shock signing was completed in a late night negotiation by Sharks coach Atiba Lyons.

The 6' 9" centre, known as 'Tap', will be landing in Sheffield this week to join team mates for pre season training.

"I am thrilled to have secured Tap within the team, he gives us a defensive presence and is proved to be a great rebounder, if not the best in the league last season" said Coach Lyons. "I think having him alongside Matt will be very complementary and I think we will see a formidable front court".

Interest in Tafari was far and wide and there had been much speculation that he would settle in mainland Europe, however following much consideration decided to stay in the BBL for another year.

"I really like the BBL, I enjoy a great relationship with the fans, so coming back to England was an easy choice" stated Tafari. "I was impressed with the professionalism of Sheffield and I'm looking forward to the opportunity of playing with Coach Lyons."

Fans will get their first glimpse of the new look Sharks at the English Institute of Sport on Sunday 13th September @ 7.30pm when they meet USA Select.

Tickets available from the Sharks office on 01142 571992.
