The NBA’s attempt to reach an agreement with EuroLeague has encountered significant resistance, with club shareholders considering the current proposal insufficient.
The issue was discussed during the recent EuroLeague owners’ meeting at Villa d’Este on Lake Como, Italy. Although the gathering primarily focused on the competition’s future structure, the NBA’s European project became an important subject.
According to reports, the offer was not considered acceptable even as an initial basis for negotiations. Financial terms remain undisclosed, but shareholders reportedly believe the proposal does not adequately reflect the value of their existing organizations.
An exchange during the meeting highlighted the dissatisfaction among some participants.
“We have to show the NBA respect”, one participant reportedly said.
“What kind of respect is the NBA showing us with such an offer?” came the response.
The disagreement extends beyond financial compensation. EuroLeague clubs are also concerned about surrendering control over organizations they have developed through decades of investment.
Several shareholders have established strong positions in their domestic markets despite operating at a financial loss for extended periods.
The NBA’s preference for controlling its European competition creates a difficult negotiating issue for clubs that want to retain authority over their brands and commercial operations.
It remains uncertain whether the NBA will submit a revised proposal.
