Andre Miller looked back on celebrating a major NBA payday by sharing a significant portion of his new wealth with members of his extended family and close circle.
After signing a $51 million contract with the Denver Nuggets, Miller hosted a house party in Sacramento. Before the gathering, he went to the bank and withdrew $300,000 in cash with the intention of giving it away.
“I get a contract. I had a party. Sacramento house party. Got a new house. Invite family and friends up. And I actually went to the bank and got out $300,000. It’s the truth. This is my therapy. Cash. When I say family, my great grandparents had 18, 20 kids.”
With so many relatives attending, Miller prepared envelopes with names on them and distributed the money throughout the party. He later realized just how quickly the entire $300,000 had disappeared.
“Everybody showed up at the house and I passed out all that bread. That’s when I knew I was tripping. I gave it all away. I came back everybody got diamond earrings in their ear, and I only took a nap for two hours. That money was gone. I handed that… envelopes with names on them.”
The celebration also left Miller with more than just a large cash bill. He remembered discovering that his swimming pool had been left in such poor condition that it needed to be replaced.
“When they left, my pool was black. When they left my party I had to get a whole new pool. My pool was black and I gave away $300,000 in cash.”
