Maxi Kleber is reportedly in talks with BC Roma SPQR over a potential move to Italy, which would reunite the veteran German forward with Luka Doncic at the club where the Los Angeles Lakers star is involved in the ownership or investment structure.
SportKlub.si reported that Kleber is discussing a possible move to the Italian capital as BC Roma continues to build its roster ahead of its debut season in Italy’s Serie A and the EuroCup.
“At first, there were only rumors, then more tangible hints, until on June 25, Luka Doncic appeared in Rome and made it clear that he was part of the ownership or investment structure of BC Roma SPQR,” SportKlub.si reported, via HoopsHype. “This is a club that took over the competitive rights of Cremona, moved to the Italian capital and will compete in Serie A and the EuroCup in the new season.”
The report added that the formation of the roster is not yet complete and that Italian media have linked Kleber with a move to the newly established club.
Kleber spent the majority of his NBA career alongside Doncic in Dallas. The 34-year-old joined the Mavericks in 2017 after developing his professional career in Germany and Spain and played 461 regular-season games for Dallas before joining the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2024-25 season.
Kleber spent the 2025-26 campaign with the Lakers, appearing in 43 games and averaging 2.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 10.7 minutes per game. He shot 45.2% from the field and 23.1% from three-point range.
His most productive NBA season came in 2019-20, when he averaged 9.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 74 games for Dallas while shooting 37.3% from three-point range. He also averaged 1.1 blocks per game that season.
Kleber has appeared in 499 NBA regular-season games during his career, averaging 6.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 44.2% from the field and 34.1% from three-point range. His ability to space the floor and defend multiple frontcourt positions made him a regular part of Dallas’ rotation for several seasons.
A move to Rome would represent a return to European basketball for Kleber for the first time since leaving Bayern Munich for the NBA in 2017. Before that, he played for Wurzburg and Obradoiro, including a 2013-14 season in which he averaged 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in Germany.
BC Roma was established in 2026 through the acquisition and relocation of Vanoli Cremona’s sporting license. The project is led by former NBA executive Donnie Nelson, while Doncic and former Italian national team coach Valerio Bianchini have also been involved.
The club has already assembled a roster featuring Nico Mannion, Corey Davis, Gerald Ayayi, Erik Stevenson, Mike Iuzzolino, Trentyn Flowers and Jesse Edwards, with Alessandro Magro serving as head coach.
