The Los Angeles Lakers made a major offseason move by acquiring restricted free agent center Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz, aiming to strengthen their defense around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
According to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, Kessler is an ideal fit thanks to his rim protection, help defense, and improving versatility.
Vecenie believes the 24-year-old has the potential to earn at least one All-Defensive Team selection during his time in Los Angeles, with a defensive ceiling higher than players like Jarrett Allen and Isaiah Hartenstein, though below Rudy Gobert.
Offensively, Kessler is an excellent screener, lob threat, and elite offensive rebounder, making him a strong pick-and-roll partner for Dončić and Reaves.
However, his limited scoring ability remains a concern, particularly in half-court playoff situations.
Vecenie believes Kessler’s contract should match his value, but notes the Lakers paid a steep price in draft assets to acquire him.
The move carries significant risk, though it could prove worthwhile if the player becomes the defensive anchor needed for the team’s success in the Luka Doncic era.
Kessler has played 4 seasons for the Jazz. He has averaged 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 201 regular-season games.
