LeBron James has yet to inform the Lakers whether he plans to continue playing during the 2026-27 season, leaving his future unresolved as free agency begins.
Los Angeles and James have not yet met this offseason, while the Warriors are expected to present the veteran superstar with a contract offer.
Golden State is limited to offering its $15.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception, whereas the Lakers have greater financial flexibility but must also consider the impact on building the roster around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
“The Lakers’ strategy during this whole thing is to sit back and give LeBron space,” Brian Windhorst said on ESPN’s Get Up.
He added that James has not officially committed to playing next season or returning to the Lakers, although he is still widely expected to continue his career.
Windhorst also noted that James has yet to meet with the Lakers and suggested the current uncertainty could simply be part of the negotiating process.
He believes Golden State is genuinely interested in signing James and structured Draymond Green’s contract opt-out to create the flexibility needed to make an offer.
Whether James is seriously considering joining Stephen Curry and Draymond Green or simply using the Warriors as leverage remains unclear.
The Lakers are reportedly hoping to receive a decision soon so they can move forward with the rest of their offseason plans.
