Before acquiring LaMelo Ball, the Timberwolves explored several options to upgrade their point guard position, including trade discussions with the Bulls centered on Josh Giddey.

Minnesota’s front office was determined to add another primary playmaker to ease the offensive burden on Anthony Edwards, who frequently faced heavy defensive attention throughout last season.

The Wolves also revisited trade talks with the Celtics regarding Jaylen Brown.

According to reports, Boston sought a return comparable to the package Minnesota ultimately sent to Charlotte for Ball, plus Rudy Gobert.

Although Brown was viewed as the more accomplished player, Minnesota believed Ball offered a better fit for its roster.

Giddey emerged as another serious target after a productive season in Chicago, where he averaged 17.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 9.1 assists across 54 games.

The Australian guard remains under contract with the Bulls through the 2028-29 season after signing a four-year, $100 million deal as a restricted free agent during the 2025 offseason.
