Euroleague Basketball announced a series of major decisions following a board meeting focused on the future growth of both the EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup.
League officials highlighted record financial results, increasing interest from clubs and investors, and continued progress on a long-term strategic plan aimed at expanding the competitions.
“Euroleague Basketball is moving forward with confidence, ambition and unity. The progress achieved across our strategic plan confirms the strength of our competitions, the commitment of our clubs and the growing appeal of our project among fans, partners, investors and basketball stakeholders,” said Euroleague Basketball president Dejan Bodiroga and CEO Chus Bueno.
“We are coming from an outstanding season and, at the same time, we are already focused on the next phase of growth. The decisions reviewed and approved by the Board are an important step towards building stronger competitions, creating greater long-term value for our clubs, and reinforcing Euroleague Basketball’s position at the heart of European basketball.”
Among the key developments, the board confirmed license extensions for LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne and Fenerbahçe Beko, while discussions with Real Madrid Baloncesto remain ongoing.
Officials also provided updates on plans to expand the EuroLeague beginning in the 2027-28 season. Multiple cities and investment groups have reportedly expressed interest in future franchises, with Rome, London, and Berlin among the markets being considered.
The board also approved a significant expansion of the BKT EuroCup. Starting in 2026-27, the competition will feature 32 teams divided into four groups of eight, with 16 clubs advancing to a revamped playoff format.
In addition, Euroleague Basketball continues to explore the creation of a new four-team preseason tournament and provided club representatives with updates on ongoing discussions involving FIBA, the NBA, and domestic leagues ahead of a scheduled meeting in Geneva.
