Jaylen Brown did not hold back after the Boston Celtics’ first-round exit, pointing directly at officiating as a factor in the seven-game loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Speaking on his Twitch stream Sunday, the Boston forward said, vis ESPN, “Every good basketball player does this. What are y’all talking about? They clearly had an agenda.”
Brown’s frustration centered on how offensive fouls were called throughout the series. He was whistled for 10 offensive fouls, twice as many as any other player in the first round.
The All-Star wing argued the same physical moves were not being called consistently. “If you’re going to call push-offs, call that,” Brown said while reviewing a play involving Paul George. “Same move. Same refs. Oh, it’s nothing? It’s play on, right?”
He added, “But you gonna call me? Everybody does it … but if it would have been me, it’d have been an offensive foul.”
Brown also pointed to a broader pattern tied to his relationship with officials. “I don’t know if it’s because I pissed the refs off. I’ve been critical about them, and I called them out a bunch of times,” he said.
He continued, “So, they were like, ‘You know what, I got you in the playoffs. Watch this.’ [Because] that’s exactly what they did.”
The Celtics forward went further, questioning specific officiating crews. “It’s clearly an agenda. Look at the same move. Some referees that if I had to choose, if I had to, like, say there’s some referees that need to be investigated. We had three of them in the last three games.”
Brown also criticized Joel Embiid, who returned in Game 4 and shifted the series. “Joel Embiid is a great player. One of the best bigs in basketball history. [But he] flops. He know it,” Brown said. “This ain’t breaking news. It is what it is.”
Despite the complaints, the numbers show a relatively even whistle across the series. Boston was called for 136 personal fouls, while Philadelphia had 132.
On the court, Embiid delivered 34 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in Game 7. Tyrese Maxey added 30 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Sixers completed a 3-1 comeback.
Brown led Boston with 33 points and nine rebounds in the elimination game. The Celtics shot 13-of-49 from three, continuing a trend that limited their offense late in the series.
Philadelphia now advances to face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Boston exits earlier than expected after finishing the regular season as the No. 2 seed.
