San Antonio Spurs advanced to the Western Conference semifinals after a 114-95 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 5 at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday, April 28. The Spurs never trailed and closed the first-round series 4-1, setting the tone early with defensive pressure and controlled execution.
Victor Wembanyama anchored the win with 17 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks, protecting the rim while controlling the glass. De’Aaron Fox added 21 points, Julian Champagnie scored 19 and Dylan Harper contributed 17 as San Antonio led by as many as 28 points.
Wembanyama highlighted the team’s early execution and approach to the closeout game, saying, “It was good. Great start. It’s never perfect, of course, but that’s exactly what we said we wanted to do before the game.” He emphasized the importance of starting with discipline and sticking to the game plan.
The 7-foot-4 center also reflected on the meaning of playoff milestones during his first postseason run. “A little bit of both. Definitely a different feeling to winning against somebody and knowing that their season’s over and also playing the same team over and over again. But we’re all competitors, so it’s good. It’s all fun.”
Wembanyama acknowledged the Spurs’ fan support at home and on the road after clinching the series. “What do I want them to know? First of all, we’re grateful for the way they show up, for how they wear their shirts at home games, and how loud they are at away games too, because we’re dominating. Our fans are dominating even on the away games.”
Addressing external expectations and narratives about the team’s youth and pressure, Wembanyama emphasized internal focus. He said, “I don’t know how my teammates handle it.” He added that the group remains locked in on basketball fundamentals such as spacing, screens and transition defense rather than outside discussion.
San Antonio now advances to the Western Conference semifinals for the first time since 2017, awaiting the winner of the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves series. The Spurs’ consistency on defense and ability to control possessions has become a defining factor in their postseason run.
The Trail Blazers were limited to 23% shooting from three-point range as San Antonio’s defense, led by Wembanyama’s rim protection, dictated the series finale. The Spurs will look to carry their execution and defensive identity into the next round.
