The Los Angeles Lakers are awaiting the return of Luka Doncic as the postseason approaches, with the All-Star guard recovering from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain suffered in early April. The latest update on the Slovenian star adds clarity to his travel plans but keeps his playoff availability in question as the Lakers prepare for a first-round series against the Houston Rockets.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported on ESPN on Monday that, “I’m told that Luka Doncic is traveling back to the United States from Spain later this week and rejoining the Lakers on Friday.”

Charania added, “But over the last week in Spain, the majority [of his time] he’s been getting treatment on that hamstring. Can he promote healing? Can he quicken [his recovery]? It is a grade 2 hamstring strain initially in early April. His timeline was 4-6 weeks. That would put him out at minimum the first week of May.”

The timing is critical for Los Angeles, which finished 53-29 to secure the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference and will face the No. 5 Houston Rockets in the first round. Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 in Los Angeles, leaving little margin for Doncic to be ready at the start of the series.

Doncic has been central to Los Angeles’ offense this season, averaging 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 64 games while leading the team in usage and half-court creation.

His absence shifts more responsibility onto LeBron James, who has averaged 20.9 points and 7.2 assists at age 41, along with Austin Reaves, who is also sidelined with a rib injury after posting 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game.

The Lakers’ offensive structure relies heavily on pick-and-roll initiation and isolation scoring, areas where Doncic generates consistent advantages, especially late in games.

The injury report also lists Jaxson Hayes as day-to-day with a foot issue, further affecting frontcourt depth behind Deandre Ayton.

The key question for the Lakers is whether their star guard can return close to full strength within the projected recovery window, as hamstring injuries often require careful management to avoid setbacks.

With Doncic expected to rejoin the team later this week, his progression toward on-court activity will likely determine how the Lakers approach their playoff rotation.
