Erik Spoelstra after Heat’s loss to Raptors: “I don’t have the answers right now”

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addressed the team’s struggles after a 128-114 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday at Scotiabank Arena.

He summarized the situation with a blunt assessment, saying, “That’s sobering. It’s definitely humbling. I don’t have the answers right now. We are searching.”

Spoelstra pointed to defensive breakdowns and lack of consistency over recent weeks. He said, “I’ve never been a part of something like this. So we just have to put our our heads together and commit, you know, it’s about committing to doing really tough things in this league.”

He also referenced recurring issues in specific stretches of games and the inability to maintain stops. “We’re plugging holes in a in a dam right now. But we have to figure it out and that’s what we’ll focus on right now,” he said, describing the ongoing search for answers on defense.

Turnovers and rebounding were central to Miami’s problems in the game, with Toronto capitalizing on extra possessions and second-chance scoring. Spoelstra said, “It’s special team stuff again. You know, the 19 second chance, 13 off turnovers versus their pressure just coughing it up. Every time we coughed it up it led to a three or an easy basket.”

He also highlighted the rebounding gap that tilted possession control. “We could not rebound the basketball. You know that was 31 relief points,” he said, noting how the Raptors maintained control even after Miami runs.

Looking ahead, Spoelstra indicated that adjustments are being considered but remained noncommittal on timing or direction. “All options are on the table now. We got to look at everything,” he said. “There’s not it’s like this is 11th hour, so we don’t have a bunch of time right now.”

Despite the urgency, he emphasized focus on the immediate schedule and resilience. “We have to. There’s no other choice. Nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” he said. “We just have to focus on sticking together and putting together a good game tomorrow night.”
