Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green suggested on The Draymond Green Show that Jerry Stackhouse should be considered for the North Carolina head coaching vacancy. Green highlighted Stackhouse’s history with UNC and his ability to command respect in the modern NIL era.

Stackhouse played at North Carolina before a 19-year NBA career spanning the 76ers, Pistons, Wizards, Mavericks, Bucks, Heat, Hawks, and Nets. He transitioned to coaching with stops as an assistant for the Raptors and Grizzlies, head coach for Raptors 905, and Vanderbilt, and currently serves as an assistant with Golden State.

North Carolina fired Hubert Davis after a 19-point second-half collapse to VCU in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The program is evaluating candidates with a decision expected in April.

Experts and oddsmakers have highlighted Todd Golden, Tommy Lloyd, Nate Oats, Dusty May, and T.J. Otzelberger as front-runners, while other potential candidates include Billy Donovan, Mark Byington, and Jay Wright. Brad Stevens removed himself from consideration, and Kenny Smith ruled out interest.

Green pointed to Stackhouse’s reputation among boosters and players, noting he possesses the demeanor and respect necessary for the role. “He should definitely be in the running for this job… He had a great career at North Carolina,” Green said.

Stackhouse’s coaching record includes rebuilding Vanderbilt into a competitive program and developing young talent in the NBA G League.

The Tar Heels’ coaching decision comes as the program aims to rebound quickly after its early tournament exit. The timing coincides with NIL developments and a competitive landscape for top recruits. Stackhouse’s combination of UNC pedigree, NBA experience, and recent success as a collegiate head coach places him among the candidates under serious consideration.
