Has James Borrego done enough to secure the full-time head coaching role in New Orleans?
The front office is expected to wait until the season ends before making a final call, but as Rod Walker of NOLA.com points out, Borrego has built a compelling case since stepping in for Willie Green earlier this year.
Since the trade deadline, the Pelicans have gone 12-7, including nine wins by double digits during that span.
“With the coaching change, (Borrego) just came in and tried to turn it around,” Pelicans forward Herbert Jones said.
“We were in a bad spot. He just changed it with his energy and encouraged guys to show up every day with energy and be themselves and continue to cheer the guy next to you and not worry about self-accomplishments.”
In a separate report, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com detailed the Pelicans’ plans for a major renovation of the Smoothie King Center.
The proposed upgrades are expected to play a key role in negotiations to extend the team’s lease, which is currently set to expire in 2029.
