Terry Rozier has stayed on the Miami Heat’s roster all season despite being placed on leave in October following his arrest on federal illegal gambling charges, but his time with the team is likely nearing its end, according to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.

Rozier isn’t expected to be included on Miami’s postseason roster, and a source tells Chiang the team is likely to waive him in the coming weeks to open a 15th roster spot.

The Heat held onto Rozier through the trade deadline in case his $26.6MM expiring contract could be used in a deal, but with no move made, there’s little reason to keep him.

Miami has enough room below the luxury tax to waive him, absorb the remaining salary, and sign a replacement.

There hasn’t been urgency to act, as depth hasn’t been an issue and younger players like Keshad Johnson and two-way players Trevor Keels, Jahmir Young, and Vladislav Goldin have already struggled to find minutes.

Delaying a move also gives the team flexibility in case injuries create a need at a specific position late in the season.

If no veteran options stand out, Miami could promote a two-way player to a standard deal and make him playoff-eligible.

Rozier must be waived by April 9 in order to clear waivers before the regular season ends.
