Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla highlighted Jaylen Brown’s all-around performance in Monday’s 120-112 win over the Phoenix Suns. “I thought it was just a well-rounded game on him on both sides of the floor… his ability to get downhill, make plays for himself or others, combat their physicality with offensive physicality and drives,” Mazzulla said.
Brown scored 18 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter, helping Boston overcome a three-point deficit late in the game. Mazzulla credited his aggressiveness, noting, “The most important thing is just continuing to be aggressive and give the game what it needs… his ability to get out in transition, his ability to get to the free throw line, his ability to make two-on-one reads.”
The coach emphasized Brown’s growth in adjusting to Jayson Tatum’s return from Achilles injury. “Tonight answers your question with his ability to integrate… it’s important that he continues to do that for us,” Mazzulla said, noting Tatum’s passing and defensive rebounding as critical to the team’s flexibility.
Mazzulla praised Boston’s defensive adjustments against Phoenix, particularly in the final minutes. “We put two on the ball… you have to have great pursuit, you have to be able to rebound because you’re in a disadvantaged situation… we were able to make it back to five on five and keep him off the free throw line,” he said, referencing Payton Pritchard role on Devin Booker.
Addressing the Suns’ pressure, Mazzulla noted, “Their ball pressure is great… they make you fight for every catch, send guys on drives… but I thought we handled the pressure well… made good two-on-one reads and got some great looks.” He also recognized the team’s late-game execution: “We had to earn the win through our defensive playmaking… through our offensive execution.”
On integrating new and returning players, Mazzulla emphasized adaptability. “Whatever it is that we got to do, we’ve got to do. Playing against any team is tough… just maintain our identity of who we are, what we do when we’re at our best, and continue to get better.”
Boston improved to 45-23, remaining second in the Eastern Conference, while Phoenix fell to 39-29. The Celtics will host Golden State on Wednesday, looking to continue their late-season momentum, while the Suns travel to Minnesota.
