Victor Wembanyama celebrated San Antonio’s 50th win of the season against the Clippers, saying, “Growth, but still not enough. I want to get to at least 62 number this season.”
He emphasized the team’s preparation as a key factor. “The amount of film we did… this is the reason we were so ready for the season,” Wembanyama said, highlighting both mental and physical preparation.
Wembanyama discussed the evolution of goals over the season. “One thing you can say is, taking each step at a time and validating, checking the boxes… my goal was never to make the play or win the play. It was to get into the playoffs,” he explained.
Reflecting on French Heritage Night, Wembanyama praised Nico Batum’s influence. “He means a lot… great leader, great example, great mentor… a guy you look up to when you’re a kid,” he said. He recalled watching Batum in the national team and now playing alongside him.
The Spurs star detailed his approach to training and leadership. “I’m very methodical… leaving the least things possible to randomness. I hold everybody that works with me to the standard… I have to surround myself with the best people possible,” Wembanyama said.
He maintained focus regardless of opponent availability. “The goal is always to play the game the same way regardless… of course, it changes the game plan a little bit, but it shouldn’t change the way we approach it,” Wembanyama said regarding Kawhi Leonard’s absence.
Wembanyama reflected on his relationship with Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson. “We still have a great relationship… one of his best qualities is he knows the players and knows how to talk to them,” he said, emphasizing Johnson’s experience in individual skills coaching.
On the season’s progress, Wembanyama remained grounded. “Even though the season will be somewhat successful… we still got 14 games and it’s very much possible that those last 14 games are satisfying or not. This is why we’re going to take each step at a time,” he said.
San Antonio’s 119-115 win over the Clippers solidified its position in the Western Conference, with Wembanyama contributing 21 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. The Spurs now sit at 50-18, reaching the milestone for the first time since 2016-17, with a balanced scoring effort led by Stephon Castle’s 23 points.
