Bennedict Mathurin scored 26 points off the bench to help the LA Clippers defeat the Chicago Bulls 119-108 on Friday at the Intuit Dome. “Just seeing how the defense plays, you know, finding ways to apply pressure,” Mathurin said about his effectiveness coming off the bench.
Mathurin praised Kawhi Leonard for consistency, highlighting the franchise record he tied. “It says a lot about him, on and off the court. He’s a very consistent guy. It’s a great thing for him and for us as well,” he said.
The young guard emphasized his commitment to film study. “I like to watch film after the games so I can get it out the way. Then I watch a little more film with the coaches. It’s been good so far, especially seeing number nine, you know, that new jersey. It feels good,” Mathurin explained.
Addressing the challenges of his role, Mathurin noted the need to adapt quickly. “Obviously, when I come in the game, the defense has a scouting report for me, but I’m really just trying to make the right plays and win the game. That’s the most important thing,” he said.
Mathurin credited veteran teammates for his defensive growth. “Being around guys like DJ, Kris, and Kawhi helps me see the game differently. They’re great defenders, and I get to have them in my corner. My defense has been better, but I want more. I want to be gritty,” he added.
He also highlighted the role of assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy in his development. “For sure. I told him to tell me every time I mess up so I can correct it as quick as I can. He’s been great, giving me the opportunity to guard the opposite team’s best player,” Mathurin said.
The Clippers’ fourth consecutive win improved their record to 34-32, solidifying a Western Conference play-in spot. Mathurin’s two-way contributions have been a key factor. “Two-way is not just something I’m saying to be out there. I really want to be one of the best. I want to be the best two-way in the NBA, so got to start somewhere to get somewhere,” he noted.
Mathurin’s focus on both ends of the floor and adaptability off the bench reflect a growing maturity that complements Leonard’s consistency. The Clippers now host the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, aiming to extend their winning streak.
