The Pistons came away with mixed results from their two recent games against the Cavaliers, splitting the matchups, but head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was still dissatisfied with how his team competed.
According to Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press, the issue wasn’t the outcome as much as the overall intensity and focus Detroit showed on the defensive end.
Bickerstaff pointed out that the Pistons had stretches where they executed properly and managed to get stops, but too often those defensive possessions were undone by Cleveland’s extra effort on the glass.
Allowing offensive rebounds after solid defensive sequences was particularly frustrating for the coaching staff.
“I’m frustrated with the effort level, the attention to detail that we played on that end of the floor,” Bickerstaff said. “The times and opportunities where we did do the right thing, did get stops, we let people outwork us to come up with offensive rebounds.”
He emphasized that the team’s identity throughout the season has been built around consistent effort and physical play.
When that energy drops, the Pistons struggle to produce the results they’re aiming for.
“We can’t afford to not play at maximum effort. That’s been our superpower all year long and, tonight, I felt like there were times where we were outworked,” Bickerstaff added. “If we’re outworked, this isn’t going to be the results that we want.”
