New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown credited his team’s defensive focus in Sunday’s 114-89 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. “For them to shoot 26, 27% from three, our weak side was active the right way,” Brown said.
Brown emphasized containing dribble drives and controlling the paint. “Our guys did a pretty good job of keeping the ball out of the middle on their drives… our all-ball defense was pretty good with the level of physicality,” he added.
Offensively, Brown praised the Knicks’ shooting and fast-break execution. “To get up 48 threes… shooting 35% was pretty good against these guys tonight,” he said, noting that New York scored 23 fast-break points and 22 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.
Brown discussed lineup adjustments that helped create separation in the second quarter. “Our rotations for the most part have been the same… it’s a process of who should play and when they should play,” he explained, underscoring the importance of player comfort and chemistry.
Mikal Bridges received special recognition for his defensive and overall performance. “Could have gone to a few people, but he was our defensive player of the game tonight,” Brown said, adding that Bridges’ offensive contribution of 25 points and five rebounds was complemented by consistent effort on both ends.
Brown also highlighted young bench players like Mohamed Diawara, who produced 14 points. “He’s the most confident young man I’ve been around… he’s worked extremely hard on his shooting,” Brown said.
Reflecting on the team’s defensive approach, Brown praised limiting Spurs’ middle drives. “If we keep it on the sideline, now those guys are two passes away… we were really good,” he said, calling the performance “high-level defense.”
Finally, Brown praised the Knicks’ culture of sacrifice and adaptability. “Our first standard is about sacrificing… everybody in that room is willing to sacrifice to make sure we achieve one common goal,” he said, citing Bridges as an example of commitment within a new offense.
The Knicks snapped San Antonio’s 11-game winning streak with strong defensive rotations, timely shooting, and bench contributions, signaling their continued push in the Eastern Conference. They will visit the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, while the Spurs head to Philadelphia for a matchup the same night.
