The Athletic’s Eric Koreen describes how second-year guard Jamal Shead has quickly become a valued presence within the Raptors organization, earning admiration not only for his on-court performance but also for the leadership qualities he brings to the team.

General manager Bobby Webster compared Shead’s impact and mentality to that of Fred VanVleet, highlighting the guard’s influence beyond statistics.

Shead’s former Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson offered similarly strong praise, calling him the “best point guard defender I’ve ever coached and he’s also the greatest leader I’ve ever had.”

Former teammate LJ Cryer, who lived with Shead during his senior season at Houston, spoke about the intensity and accountability Shead brings every day.

“He’s intense. You can tell he means every word he says,” Cryer said. “He’s not gonna let you slack. If he sees you not playing hard, he’s gonna call you out on that. He doesn’t hold his tongue. He practices what he preaches. He picks up the ball full court.

“He’s hounding guys, diving on the floor, all that. Whenever he’s playing with that intensity, you’ve got to match him. You can’t just have one guy out there playing balls to the wall and the rest of us chilling.”

Shead has played 2 seasons for the Raptors. He has averaged 7.1 points and 4.7 assists in 134 regular-season games.
