The San Antonio Spurs defeated the East-leading Detroit Pistons 114-103, and won a season-high nine games in a row on Monday night.
Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and six blocks, while Devin Vassell scored 28 points to snap the Pistons’ five-game winning streak.
On the other hand, Cade Cunningham finished with 16 points and 10 assists after missing 21 of 26 shots. Jalen Duren had 25 points and 14 rebounds, playing for the second time after suspension.
The Spurs jumped out to a 14-2 lead and were ahead for much of the game in the opener of a five-game trip.
Detroit rallied to lead by three after the first quarter, but San Antonio kept their intensity, sustaining the lead with three-pointers and Wembanyama’s defensive stops.
The Spurs scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to start a double-digit lead and maintained a comfortable cushion.
Meanwhile, the heat came up in the second quarter when Cunningham was called for an offensive foul after extending his arms and knocking down Spurs guard Stephon Castle.
Spurs forward Keldon Johnson responded by pushing Cunningham, and then Duren pointed his right finger in Johnson’s face.
Johnson and Duren were called for technical fouls.
Both teams will play on Wednesday: San Antonio at Toronto, while the Pistons host the Thunder.
