Victor Wembanyama called San Antonio’s 121-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday “super fun,” highlighting the team’s ability to set the tone early. “It wouldn’t have been fun if we didn’t dictate the game,” he said following the Spurs’ wire-to-wire win at Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama emphasized adjusting to Detroit’s physical play. “For me it’s all about the angles. If you don’t go to the basket, they will get away with fouls. I didn’t let them do that today,” he explained, noting the Pistons lead the league in fouls.

He praised De’Aaron Fox for his role in jumpstarting the team. “He set the tone offensively early and got a few big stops down the stretch too. That was some De’Aaron Fox for sure,” Wembanyama said. The two players’ synergy continues to grow, with Wembanyama adding, “He looks for me. I look for him. He’s just amazing to get a team going.”

Wembanyama addressed his 39 minutes on the court, explaining trust in the medical and analytics staff. “I trust them very much and I know they got a plan and they will allow me to play as much as it’s possible and reasonable. My goal is that eventually I will be able to play this kind of minutes all the time,” he said.

He reflected on the team’s strong record against top opponents. “It matters a lot. Being good against top teams and great against smaller teams shows potential for us,” he said, citing the contributions of teammates like Carter Bryant diving for loose balls and Keldon Johnson showing hustle over the scorer’s table.

Wembanyama also highlighted key defensive plays. “Carter’s block on LeVert when Detroit was about to cut it to six… that was tough. That’s a big-time play, something our defensive staff really emphasizes. Those are game-changing plays,” he said, noting the impact of multiple effort stops.

In the game, Wembanyama finished with 38 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks. Fox added 29 points, and Stephon Castle recorded 11 points and 12 assists. The Spurs never trailed and improved to 45-17, winning 13 of their last 14 games, while Detroit fell to 45-16 atop the Eastern Conference.

San Antonio hosts the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, while Detroit returns home to face Brooklyn on Saturday.
