LaMelo Ball has long drawn mixed opinions during his NBA career, with some critics questioning whether his flashy, highlight-driven style could translate into consistent winning.
However, signs of growth have begun to emerge during his sixth season, as the player continues to show improved decision-making and leadership on the court.
Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer notes that Ball delivered one of his most controlled performances Sunday, scoring an efficient 37 points in a victory over Washington.
Rather than forcing difficult shots, Ball said his focus was on letting the game come to him and selecting opportunities within the flow of the offense, explaining that he was “finding the best looks.”
That approach reflects the type of development head coach Charles Lee has been encouraging throughout the season.
“I love it,” Lee said. “I think it just shows the continued growth and maturity that he’s proven all year. He has helped impact winning in a lot of different ways. It’s been his defensive activity. It’s been moments like that where he’s able to just keep making the right play no matter if he’s got it going, no matter if somebody else has got it going.
“He just has a better feel for the game. I feel like this year he’s trusting his teammates (more). I’m really proud of him for how he kind of handled himself and had the hot hand maturity in that moment.”
Ball has also benefited from improved roster support this season, with Brandon Miller healthy and rookie Kon Knueppel emerging as a strong contributor.
Although Ball’s shooting percentages, 40.1% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range, remain close to his career norms, his overall approach has shifted.
He is taking fewer shots while placing greater emphasis on playmaking and involving teammates, a change that has helped Charlotte play more cohesive basketball.
