Golden State head coach Steve Kerr credited Brandin Podziemski’s late-game performance as a decisive factor in the Warriors’ 128-117 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at Chase Center.
“Oh, it was phenomenal… he had eight rebounds in the quarter… hit a couple big shots… he was brilliant and we needed it,” Kerr said, highlighting the guard’s 12 points in the fourth that fueled a 19-8 run.
Kerr emphasized the team’s approach against a fatigued Nuggets squad. “This was their third game in basically three and a half days… our whole game plan going in was just… keep the pressure on them, try to wear them down, keep running,” he explained, noting the scheduling advantage after the All-Star break.
Defensive strategy against Nikola Jokic played a key role, according to Kerr. “We did a good job of getting them out of their sets… he didn’t get the ball in the usual spots… fatigue was a big issue for them,” he said, pointing to Jokic’s limited production in the fourth quarter.
Al Horford’s perimeter shooting also drew praise from the coach. “Al was fantastic… the spacing, popping and knocking down shots early… really set a good tone… he was a big part of that,” Kerr stated, as the veteran knocked down six 3-pointers en route to 22 points.
Kerr discussed how the team navigated the absence of top players. “The biggest thing we try to think of… what are the best five-man combinations… keep it simple offensively… as long as we’re spaced and running the floor, moving the ball, we know we’re going to get some good looks,” he explained.
The coach reflected on Podziemski’s overall growth. “He does so many things for us… rebounding… getting the ball up the floor… helps himself by getting off the ball earlier… a fantastic night for him,” Kerr said, acknowledging the guard’s versatility and confidence.
Moses Moody’s steady play also earned recognition. “Moses has been brilliant… shooting the lights out… confidence… maybe been our most consistent performer… his on-ball defense is top of the league,” Kerr noted, highlighting the guard’s 23 points and seven rebounds.
Kerr addressed injuries, confirming Draymond Green was scratched due to a lower-back issue and offered no new update on Kristaps Porzingis. Despite absences, Golden State displayed balanced scoring with seven players in double figures, shooting 51% overall and 40% from 3-point range.
The win snapped a two-game skid and moved Golden State to 29-27, while Denver fell to 36-21. Kerr’s postgame comments underscored confidence in the team’s ability to sustain offensive rhythm and defensive pressure even when key contributors are sidelined.
