Nikola Jokic has often been described as detached from the spotlight, but the Denver Nuggets star pushed back on the idea that he lacks passion for the game.
In a recent interview with Malika Andrews, the three-time MVP addressed a long-running narrative about his demeanor and commitment.
“I care a lot those people,” Jokic said. “I mean, I think if you don’t care for winning, you’re not supposed to be in the sport. I think just my personality maybe a little bit different or I accept victories and accept success in different way. But I think I care about basketball and I love to play basketball and I enjoy it and enjoy competing. Just maybe accepting the success or defeat or not success differently.”
The perception intensified after Denver’s 2023 championship run, when he said, “It’s good. It’s good. The job is done. We can go home now.” The quote resurfaced frequently in discussions about how much the Serbian center values titles and legacy.
Jokic explained that his emotional responses may differ, but his priorities remain tied to winning.
“To be honest, I think I’m going to play basketball until I like I can play and I can play on a high level,” he said. “I think because I enjoy it. I love to play. So, I think I’m going to play until like I can perform on a high level and still kind of enjoy, still be healthy.”
His production this season supports that claim. Through 39 games in 2025-26, the 30-year-old is averaging 28.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 10.7 assists in 34.3 minutes per game. He is shooting 59.0% from the field and 42.0% from three while posting a 64.7% effective field goal percentage.
Denver ranks third in the Western Conference at 35-20, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.
When asked about outside expectations and comparisons, he dismissed the idea that reputation determines outcomes.
“I don’t believe in that to be honest because I think if we could we will do it last year,” he said, referencing playoff narratives. “We had opportunity we have actually two opportunities we didn’t get it done and in my opinion they played the best basketball in the season last year and that’s why they won the championship.”
