Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers initially joked with Michael Levine, an NBA marketing executive, about taking part in the three-point contest during All-Star weekend.
What started as lighthearted banter quickly turned serious when one of the scheduled participants withdrew, opening the door for Lillard to step in, as reported by Jason Quick of The Athletic.
Lillard has spent the entire season recovering from the Achilles tear he sustained with the Milwaukee Bucks in last year’s playoffs, focusing on rehabilitation rather than game action.
Despite that, he felt his presence would add something meaningful to the event.
“All-Star Weekend needs stars,” the veteran guard said. “People want to see stars competing.”
For Lillard, the opportunity also provides a mental and emotional lift during the grind of rehab. The repetitive nature of recovery work has left him craving the intensity of real competition, even in a skills contest setting.
“I need some competition,” he added. “I’ve just been working out, not playing, so I need some type of competition. I just need a bump.”
