Jaylen Brown delivered 33 points and 11 rebounds as the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks 110-100 on Tuesday, improving to 32-18 and holding third place in the Eastern Conference, while Dallas fell to 19-31 and extended its losing streak to five games.
Asked about lineup changes without Payton Pritchard in the opening group, Brown downplayed any disruption. “I don’t think it changes anything. Our system is our system. Still looking for the same type of shots and defensively still looking for the same thing,” he said.
Brown’s performance continued a stretch of high-scoring outings, and he attributed it to approach rather than circumstance. “Just being aggressive. Getting to my spots. Fighting through the fatigue… we’re in the depth of the NBA season where the mileage starts to add up,” he said.
The All-Star wing also addressed his first Eastern Conference Player of the Month award this season. “It doesn’t mean much to be honest, but I don’t feel like I had a better month in December, but hey, who’s counting?” Brown said.
The night carried emotional weight after Anfernee Simons was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Nikola Vucevic earlier in the day, and Brown acknowledged the human side of roster movement. “It’s a business, but there’s a human aspect to it… since he’s been here, he’s contributed to winning,” he said.
Brown emphasized respect for his former teammate. “He was a great teammate and did everything we asked him and more… Anfernee has all the respect in the world from me, and I hope he gets everything he deserves,” he said.
With the trade deadline approaching, Brown spoke about leadership during uncertainty. “You just stay poised… whatever happens, everything is going to be all right,” he said, pointing to the Celtics’ handling of adversity throughout the season.
Boston’s preparation has leaned heavily on film sessions, which Brown described as essential to the team’s growth. “I call them like Celtic University. It’s like a classroom… the difference between good and great players is the emphasis on the details,” he said.
He explained that nothing is overlooked in those meetings. “Literally everything… from communication on a screen to making an on-target pass versus a pass at somebody’s knees,” Brown said.
On the floor, that attention to detail showed as Boston shot 47-of-96 and built a lead as large as 23 points. Payton Pritchard scored 26 points, while Luka Garza added 16 off the bench to support Brown’s scoring.
Brown also looked ahead to the schedule, noting the physical challenge of facing Houston on a back-to-back. “They’re a good defensive team, so I take it as a challenge… I’ve got to make sure my body feels at its best,” he said.
Boston continues its Texas trip against the Rockets, while Dallas returns home to face San Antonio, searching for answers as the Western Conference race tightens.
