Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum continues to move closer toward a comeback after the torn Achilles he suffered during last season’s playoffs, but there remains a real possibility that his return will not happen until next year.
After NBA TV’s Chris Haynes reported that Tatum’s status is “up in the air,” Tatum shared a similar outlook with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
The forward explained that there is still uncertainty around his timetable because he “wants to get it right the first time, so it’s just a lot to think about.”
His comments line up with Haynes’ earlier reporting and with what Tatum himself has mentioned recently on a podcast, where he acknowledged the mental and physical considerations involved in coming back from such a serious injury.
Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has repeatedly stated that the player’s rehab is going well, but he has also emphasized that there will be no rush to bring him back.
Stevens has stressed that the final call will be made jointly by Tatum, the team’s medical staff, and the front office.
He recently even said Tatum would not return until he is “110% healthy,” underscoring just how careful Boston intends to be with its franchise player.
